Bookshelf Mounting
with Ledger Board

Two floor-to-ceiling bookshelves flanking a bed, mounted securely using a ledger board system due to stud placement constraints.

Jersey City, NJ Heavy load — books Experience required

What's being installed

Two tall bookshelves, one on each side of the bed, symmetrically flanking the headboard.

Why this isn't a standard mount

Stud alignment issue

The wall studs do not line up with the bracket mounting points on these shelves. Standard stud-to-bracket mounting is not possible without significant repositioning that would break the symmetry of the layout.

Building note: This is a converted mill building (Dixon Mills, Jersey City). Wall construction may differ from standard residential drywall. Please verify wall depth and composition before drilling. The exposed pipe running along the ceiling is noted — probe carefully.

Ledger board mounting

Rather than mounting directly into studs at bracket points, I'd like a ledger board installed across the wall first. The ledger board acts as a solid mounting substrate — the shelf brackets are then screwed directly into it, exactly per CB2's installation instructions. The ledger board is itself bolted into the studs, so the load path is: shelf brackets → ledger board → studs.

Preferred approach

Two ledger boards set end to end spanning the full width of the wall behind the bed, screwed into every available stud. The seam where the two boards meet must land on a stud so the joint is fully supported. Both shelf units are then mounted into the ledger board face per manufacturer instructions, at whatever horizontal position achieves visual symmetry. The ledger board is a structural intermediate and provides a stronger, more flexible substrate than hitting a single stud directly would.

Material specs (to discuss / source together)
  • ¾" birch or maple plywood — no MDF, no OSB
  • Two boards (a full-length sheet won't fit in my car), set end to end across the wall
  • Seam between the two boards must land on a stud
  • 3" structural screws — GRK or Spax brand preferred
  • Hit minimum 2–3 studs along each board
  • I will pre-paint the boards dark green (#2C4A3E approx.) to blend with the wall before installation

What I need you to do

Before you bid

  • This is a heavy-load install — shelves will hold hundreds of pounds of books when full
  • I am not experienced with this type of work — clear communication appreciated
  • The wall color is dark green; I'd like minimal visible hardware if possible
  • The room has good natural light and open floor space — easy to work in
  • 4th floor — elevator accessible via connected walkway from adjacent building; some stair navigation required. Heads up for large materials like plywood.
